We're the Millers is a surprisingly funny comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston. The film tells the story of a small-time pot dealer (Sudeikis) who, with a fake family, must smuggle an enormous amount of pot into the United States from Mexico. Obviously, everything that can go wrong does.
Sudeikis and Aniston are excellent in their respective roles. Sudeikis proves that he can lead a movie with his casual awkward charm. Aniston plays a former stripper and is the highlight of the movie. When given good racy material, Aniston shines. I hated 2011's Horrible Bosses, but Aniston was the highlight as a sex-crazed dentist. She has no shame and really lets go, which works marvelously here. Kathryn Hahn also has an oddly funny supporting role.
The humor is lowbrow and the script is flawed, but it is funny. Yes, much of the jokes are a little too forced and the film goes on too long at the end, but when I'm laughing, many flaws are forgiven. 2013 has been a pretty average year for comedies. The Heat was fair and The To-Do List was terrible. So, when I see a movie that makes me laugh, it is a reason to rejoice.
We're the Millers goes all-out for its R-rating and it works to its advantage. It has some heart and is sweet, something The Heat wasn't. This movie's jokes don't always work, but they frequently do and are very funny.
Overall, there's not much to say about We're the Millers other than I was entertained. I had a good time at the movies and, after all, isn't that what the movies are for?
