The Academy Award shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film has been released. The list is as follows:
• Belgium, The Broken Circle Breakdown, Felix van Groeningen, director
• Bosnia and Herzegovina, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker, Danis Tanovic, director
• Cambodia, The Missing Picture, Rithy Panh, director
• Denmark, The Hunt, Thomas Vinterberg, director
• Germany, Two Lives, Georg Maas, director
• Hong Kong, The Grandmaster, Wong Kar-wai, director
• Hungary, The Notebook, Janos Szasz, director
• Italy, The Great Beauty, Paolo Sorrentino, director
• Palestine, Omar, Hany Abu-Assad, director
The list features some excellent films, but many great ones were left off. Therefore, I am going to publish a series of reviews of films submitted by their countries that didn't make the shortlist. I will have a review of the Mexican submission, Cannes Best Director award-winner, Heli, up shortly. By the end, I should have 5-10 reviews.
